ARRL International DX Contest, 17.-18. February 2001HB9CZF - All Band - QRPEnd of last year I finished building my K2 Transceiver and I am really impressed what this little rig does. Therefore, why shouldn't I try a "big" Contest in QRP class. CW is my favourite mode on HF anyway and QRO is little challenge especially at the peak of Solar cycle. In the picture below the QTH I spent 14 hours. For 10m, 15m and 20m I used a Telrex beam and for 40m and 80m a Long Wire antenna. The tower for the endpoint is visible 1/3 from the left side of the picture.
As you might see the terain is sloping towards W/VE. The line between the tower with the beam and the endpoint of the LW points to 315°. Years ago I read in a german magazine that the sloping ground lowers the elevation of the radiated beam-pattern. After the contest I can confirm: East- and West-Coast stations produces the same RX-levels and I could tell what happened on the other side: Is that really 5W ?!?
Overall I managed 24 4-band-QSO's [AA2FB (NY), K1AR (MA), K1RX (NH), K1TTT (NH), K1VUT (MA), K1ZM (MA), K2NG (NJ), K2ONP (NY), K3ANS (PA), K3LR (PA), K3NM (PA), K3WW (PA), K4JA (VA), K8GL (MI), K9NS (IL), KI1G (RI), KQ3F (PA), N2RM (NJ), N2XI (NY), W3LPL (MD), W3PP (DE), W4KZ (GA), W4MYA (VA), W8AV (OH)] and one 5-band-QSO with KC1XX (NH). I missed W3LPL on 40m because he had to defend his QRG from "intruders" and I was too lazy to wait ...
The above picture shows where all happened. K2 in the center, notebook with N6TR software to the left, TR7 and TL-922 switched off (hi), Contest-Keyer by BCC (Bavarian Contest Club), Headset that came with the Dell-Notebook (not bad quality!).The red box is the remote control for my long-wire antenna. The matching network (L-C) sits on the top of the tower and I set them either for the 40m or 80m band. Claimed Score of HB9CZF
Final Score = 192576 points. I only spent 20 minutes on 80m before I went to bed. Final Score published in October 2001 QST: HB9CZF, 190'128 points, 466 QSOs, 136 Mults Breakdown of the States and Provinces worked
