ARRL International DX Contest, 15.-16. February 2003

HB9CZF - SOAB HP

Rig: K2, KPA100, TL-922 with 500W; Ant: 3el Yagi.

What a difference to last year! Sunspots way down and K-Index up. When VE1JF morsed my signal was very loud I thought it will be a good contest. Initially my idea was for SO 15m only but there was too much competition for an easy win, hi. The back-up idea was to get the Elecraft WAS in one day. The result was I spent approximately 15 hours on 15m and swept 10m and 20m just before I left. The best 10 minute rate was 132 QSO/hour which is also below last year's 150 QSO/hour. But there were also nice surprises: VE6JY called my at 12:26z way before I expected any propagations to Alberta and VY1JA brought me Yukon! Unfortunately I missed ND and WY this year. Well, the Elecraft WAS was achieved with help of a few other contests, hi. KH7X in RTTY one weekend before and WL7E with 5W in 2001 (HI and AK cannot be worked in this contest). ND and WY were from 2001 100W resp. 5W. Jerry, K6III told me that I will be the first DX for the Elecraft WAS. BTW: I did not pay attention to the lower bands and I was rather surprised when LuxLog told me I have more states on 160m than on 80m ...

An average of 12.7% of the US calls were not in the assigned call area. W2 stayed at home most with only 5.0% out of state compared to the leader W4 which contributed 23.0%. It is nice and warm in W4 or was it the snowstorm in NJ/NY ?!?. Only 4 out of 1035 OM/YL's were using e.g. /4.
