CQ WW 160m DX Contest, 25.-26. January 2003HB9CZF - SO CW LPRig: K2 with 100W; Ant: Dipole 10m agl. Stew Perry in December was disapointing - conds were bad - but I gave 160m another try. While the higher bands were open I run BARTG Sprint Contest (RTTY) and just before 8pm I switched to the top band for the first time. Nothing special to hear and I worked 76 Europeans. Noise level was S1 all night. Just after midnight I found VY2ZM on 1870-ish (if I remember correctly). He was 519, lonly and not burried in the CW-clicks. After several calls Jeff came back with "?"and later "CZF". Then I reduced my speed and finally he had my call! Jeff must have really good ears because the apex of my dipol is at 10m agl and the ends at 4m and 1m agl. EZNEC tells me that impedance should be around 7 Ohms but my SWR is 1:1. Therefore, I assume the remaining 43 Ohms are heating the ground. Later I also heard W4MYA but he was to weak. I thought I better get some sleep and see what happens at sunrise. 5:30am I was back at my K2. W1FJ was there with 519. After a few QRS-calls he had my call sign. What was re-confirmed this morning is that "CZF" is kind of easy to copy but "HB9" is often mixed up with "SP9" or "HA9". The peak in signal strength was approximately 1/2 hour before my sunrise (7:06am). East Coaster produced up to S7 on my K2 (Preamp off). And finally: What's the meaning of "country abbreviation" in the exchange? "HB" would be one. "HE" is shorter and confused some OPs :-) What about "CH" ? (Remeber the white little stickers we had at the back of our cars ?)
