ARRL International DX Contest, 21.-22. February 2004

I had no big plans for this contest. Due to family commitments I could only play on Saturday and Sunday morning. The first challenge was the oil heating system. It didn't want to heat up the radiators as expected and after a manual intervention at least the shack warmed up. Contesting at +3C isn't fun.

Conds were much better than expected and 10m was open past local sunset. 15m was also in good shape and on 20m I had antenna problems. Parts of the 20m reflector got lost last autumn which resulted in higher SWR (1:2.5 .. 1:3 range)

40m and 80m were very quiet and I was able to work some new states. I was a bit disapointed by the low numbers of VE active. On the other hand I was really surprised how good K/VE ears are. On 40m and 80m I'm running a 41m LW slightly sloping in direction North America and I could work with my 100W everything I heard, even some West-Coast.

The assigned call areas in the US have nothing to do with actual calls in the contest. I was surprised how many out of area calls I had.

Rig: K2/100
Ant: 3el Yagi for 10-20m and 41m LW for 40/80m. Next year I need a 160m antenna. I had to turn down two QSY requests :-(
