Worked All Europe RTTY, 13. - 14. November 2004HB9CZF - SOAB LPAfter last years contest my idea was a serious effort in 2004. Later I had to learn that Satruday of the WAE RTTY weekend coincided with the general meeting of SWISS-ARTG (that's where my webpage is hosted). But this was compensated with two interesing presenation on MixW2 and SDR-1000 (a software defined radio). Late Saturday afternoon I arrived at my contest hut and started assembling my station. New was the USB micro KEYER by microHAM which arrived a few weeks ago. Installation was easy especially after reading Don's, AA5AU, website and soon all cables where connected between the micro KEYER and the Omni VI+. The first RTTY signals was found on 20m but only a few "???" returned. Hmmm, was I off QRG ? Lets try another station which resulted in a few QRZ series. Well, give it a try on 40m where the signals are much stronger. OH2BP was my next victim. First call and QRZ was returned. Another call and OH2BP replied: "Dominik your are reversed". I see! How do I reverse my TX signal? I couldn't find a switch in the USB Device Router nor in MMTTY. Well, from my previous setup I had a 2k2 resistor and a BCY59 NPN transistor left over and with these two components I was able to build a inverter. Finally the contest could start.
Conds were aweful. S3 to S5 noise on 40 and 80m. 20m was noisy too and 15/10m already closed. YB5BO called in on 40m with a good signal. Another XU7 was there but strugled with the unruly pile-up. Around midnight I went to bed and got up just at sunrise where I hoped for a few 80m NA QSO. No North American signal at all! On Sunday the noise on all bands disappeared and even 10m opened for some nice DX. 3B8MM and VK6DXI in an empty band were worked. Later even two K3 were found. At 14:17z I had to call it a day - just when the NA stations started to build - , dismantle my station and drive to the airport to pick-up my XYL. Overall the conds were very bad and every QSO was hard work but QTC make this contest so unique.
