Russian DX Contest, 19.-20. March 2005HB9CZF - SOAB LP CWRDXC was my first contest in 2005. Anything else planned had to be cancelled due to snow. Friday morning I arrived at my contest hut and one of the first task was to climb the tower and re-tighten all screws of the 3el SteppIR. Somehow they became loose. Was it winter or didn't we fix them last fall? Temperature was almost +20C and what a change to the -20C two weeks ago. At the lower tower I added a temporary 40m DeltaLoop fed by 100m balanced ladder line. Antenna matching was performed by the BT1500A manufactured by Palstar. Top corner hung 14m above ground and the lower horizontal wire roughly 2m above ground. The DL was overlooking a 20m high ridge and had a clear view direction Asia. Further out the terain has a gentle slope for another 100m in elevation. At the start of the contest I concentrated on 40m and compared the existing 41m LW against the DL. LW was 5..10dB louder except at its radiation minimum pointing 45..55 degrees. There the DL was 5..10dB stronger. Overall the LW contributed 80% of the QSO and the remaining 20% go to the DL. I don't think the additional DL is worth putting up since I can work these stations on the LW as well. At least EZNEC and real world tell the same story. Other observations during the contest: 10m was more or less dead. I could only work VR2BG and DJ5MW
(ground wave) but I didn't check 10m very often.
