Helvetia Contest, 28.-29. April 2007

HB9CZF - SOAB CW

As a preparation for the Helvetia contest I looked at the solar data. With a Flux of 70 and Kp Index of 4-5 it would be challenging. Unfortunately the sun was very quiet many many days before and after our contest weekend. Bad luck :-(

On the antenna side I only hang up the 2x41m doublet for 160m and the usual SO2R setup consisting of the K2/100 as main rig and Omvi VI+ as secondary rig. Furthermore, I gave the TT Centurion PA a go. Soon after the contest started I had to switch off the PA due to a miserable signal it put on the air. As I found out later there were two issues. Eight 220uf/450V in the 3kV powersupply had to be replaced and the new fan modulated the grid of both 3-500z mechanically.

Even with 100W it was fun playing for 12hours (my additional 6h were pre-occupied by my family). Conds were tough and JA only worked on 40m but big surprise was the Sporadic E opening Sunday morning which brought several DXCC towards the East into the log.
